Cambodia Enforces Nationwide Closure of Illegal Border Crossings to Combat Transnational Crimes

The Cambodian Ministry of Interior has ordered the immediate closure of all illegal border crossing points nationwide, implementing stringent measures to enhance border security and address cross-border crimes.

Effective 13 November 2024, the directive mandates provincial governors in border regions to enforce these measures, with accountability measures in place to ensure compliance.

Under the new policy, the movement of people, goods, and vehicles through unauthorized border corridors is strictly prohibited. Governors are held responsible for enforcement within their jurisdictions and face legal consequences for any violations.

The ministry has also directed authorities to strengthen monitoring and control at official border crossings, with an emphasis on scrutinizing passengers and cargo to combat transnational drug trafficking and other illegal activities threatening national and social security.

This decisive move follows reports of rising illegal border activities, including unauthorized crossings, makeshift checkpoints, and an influx of illegal immigration. The ministry has identified the growing threat of transnational crime and drug trafficking as critical challenges requiring immediate action.

The government also calls on local communities and citizens to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities to help safeguard Cambodia’s borders. This initiative is part of a broader effort to maintain national security and ensure the integrity of the country’s border control systems.
