Cambodia’s Annual Loss Estimated to be US$500 Million Due to Traffic Accidents

Traffic accidents in Cambodia kill an average of five people per day and are causing an estimated loss of about US$500 million annually from the national budget, according to the Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport.

Stated this in a press conference on 20 March 2023, he urged citizens to obey traffic laws to avoid the loss of human and animal lives.

“Please obey the traffic law, please don’t cause the traffic accident which is the main cause leading to lives’ loss as an average of five people is killed daily in traffic accidents,10 people are injured daily in traffic accidents and also the national budget of US$500million is annually loss,” said the Senior Minister.

In his address, the Senior Minister emphasized the importance of regular technical inspections of vehicles and responsible driving to protect oneself and others on the road. He urged drivers to comply with traffic laws, saying, “Please don’t cause traffic accidents which are the main cause of lives lost.”

UNDP has reported that traffic accidents are Cambodia’s primary cause of human and animal life loss. The high number of accidents on the roads of Cambodia poses a significant challenge to the nation’s road development goals.

It is crucial that all road users comply with traffic laws and take steps to ensure their safety and that of others. This will help reduce the number of road accidents and minimize the resulting economic loss to the nation.
