Cambodia Reaffirms Commitment to Preserve Phnom Penh International Airport as New Development Begins

The Cambodian government has set a clear vision for the future of Phnom Penh International Airport (Por Chen Tong) as it embarks on the development of the new Techo International Airport. Prime Minister Hun Sen emphasized that the original airport would remain under state control and would not be sold to the private sector.

During the official inauguration of Techo International Airport on October 20, 2025, the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining the historical significance of Por Chen Tong Airport. He announced that the state allocates approximately 3 million baht annually for its upkeep, highlighting two primary objectives: to serve as a reserve airport and to transform part of the site into a public park for the community’s benefit.

Prime Minister Hun Sen addressed concerns about potential privatization, noting that there are no plans to sell any portion of the old airport. In a past incident, a criminal act involving the forgery of the Prime Minister’s signature was attempted to facilitate the sale of the land, but the perpetrator has since been apprehended.

The Por Chen Tong International Airport has been operational for nearly 70 years, having closed its doors in July 2025. Following its closure, all domestic and international flights were successfully relocated to the new Phnom Penh International Airport, which spans over 2,600 hectares in Takhmao City, Kandal Province.

The government’s decision to preserve the original airport reflects a commitment to safeguarding national heritage and serving the public interest, underscoring Cambodia’s dedication to maintaining its historical assets amidst ongoing development.
