Construction Deal for National Road No.5 Signed

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has signed a construction deal with three Japanese firm as part of the US$500 million loan project funded by the government of Japan.

The deal between the MPWT and Ilsung-Cienco I Joint Venture, Obayashi Corporation, and Tekken-Ikee Joint Venture, is for the work on the rehabilitation of NR5, for which each firm is to have different package all totaling to US$243.74 million, according to a press release dated on 28 January 2019.

The deal is for the companies to oversee construction work of the 110.9-kilometre section of road which is to be expanded to 23-metres wide and upgraded from two lanes to four lanes starting from Thlea Ma’Om to Battambang province. Construction is to be completed within 42 months.

MPWT Minister H.E Senior Minister Sun Chanthol explained the importance of this road construction for Cambodia.

“This section of the road [NR5] is the ASEAN Highway No.1, so it can increase exports and imports and it is a potentially important road that will serve the Cambodian economy, especially by reducing traffic accidents and traffic congestion,” he said.

According to the minister, the upgrade of the 366-kilometre long NR5 (66 kilometres is new road) is under the US$500 million concessional loan from the government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with construction divided into three main parts; the Northern, the Southern, and the Middle.

In addition, the US$500 million is divided into five different packages of which three are signed and the other two are in the pipeline.
