Digital Reality Check: How 3D Geospatial Tech is Minimizing Costly Mistakes in Global Construction

In the high-stakes world of construction, where a single wrong decision can cost millions, infrastructure developers are increasingly turning to 3D geospatial technology to test and visualize their choices before breaking ground. Bentley Systems, the infrastructure engineering software giant, is spearheading this shift by integrating the advanced capabilities of its recent acquisition, Cesium, into the global construction workflow.

Bentley’s core message is clear: Cesium’s 3D geospatial platform combined with its existing powerful tools are transforming every phase of construction—from initial design and bidding to site management and long-term maintenance—by providing hyper-realistic visualization of projects overlaid onto their actual physical location.

A key example is the integration of Cesium with Blyncsy (also acquired by Bentley), a startup that collects crowdsourced road data. Cesium quickly maps Blyncsy’s near real-time traffic, road condition, and infrastructure health insights to a precise position in space and time. This visual context is vital for agencies like the U.S. Department of Transportation to address road safety and maintenance operations.

Cesium champions open source and open standards, including the community standard 3D Tiles for efficient streaming of massive 3D data. This “plug-and-play” ecosystem allows companies to easily integrate its platform. For instance, Blyncsy was able to integrate and visualize its data with Cesium in under six hours.

The combination of Cesium’s open-source 3D geospatial platform with Bentley’s iTwin platform creates a comprehensive foundation for infrastructure digital twins. This package enables users, such as those on the 6DPlanner platform, to combine diverse data types (BIM, GIS, CAD) into a single model for project management, monitoring progress, and even visualization with VR/AR.

Tens of thousands of developers use Cesium, from startups to global companies like Komatsu, which uses the technology to monitor construction sites worldwide and perform precise measurements.

The collaboration demonstrates Bentley’s commitment to growing the open geospatial ecosystem, providing users with the freedom, interoperability, and capability to work with their data and tools more effectively, ultimately creating a higher value across the entire infrastructure sector.
