Authorities Accelerate Impact Resettlement for Battambang Airport Renovation

The local authorities and relevant officials have been speeding up works on compensation to affected people whose lands are located nearby the abandoned Battambang airport that will soon be reopened.

SSCA spokesman Mr Sin Chansereyvutha said that on 09 December the development of main facilities in the airport had not been made. At this stage, the officials are focusing on getting the land back.

“While in the first stage of the working process, the government has yet to decide whether the reopening will be implemented by the government or by the private sector,” said Mr Sin.

“We have not talked with any private sector [companies] yet. We want to wait until we are ready as the private sector will invest only if they benefit from the project. However, we expect that the project will help boost the economy significantly, as it is one of the large domestic airports,” he added.

The airport has been shut down for decades. However, there are some remaining facilities, including a 1,600-metre long runway and an old terminal.
