Bassac-Kampot Seaport Project Shows High Economic Potential and Environmental Sustainability

The linked Bassac River Navigation and Logistics System project has completed its two-year feasibility study and the results have been highly promising. The project, which will connect Tonle Bassac to Kampot seaport over a length of 180 kilometers, has been evaluated to provide significant benefits to the national economy while also being environmentally sustainable.

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the project has been deemed technically feasible and compliant with Mekong law 1995. The study also found no legal or environmental issues, and it is set to generate a higher Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) than the standard set by the nation and international institutions.

Speaking about the successful result of the study, HE SUN Chanthol, Senior Minister, Minister of Public Works and Transport, said, “The project will reduce time, transportation costs, and procedures and it is going to become one of the major tourist routes in Cambodia.”

The Bassac-Kampot Seaport project is expected to boost economic growth and development in the country, and it will become a vital transportation and logistics hub connecting Tonle Bassac and Kampot seaport. Moreover, the project will enhance Cambodia’s tourism industry as it is set to become a major tourist attraction.

According to H.E Chanthol, the next step for the project is to be detailed prepared in order to submit for review and approval from Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cabinet. The project is expected to have a positive impact on the national economy while also being environmentally sustainable.
