Border Ring Road Project in Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri Surpasses 72% Completion in 13 Months

Cambodia’s historic border ring road project has reached a significant milestone, achieving an overall completion rate of 72.29% as of January 11, 2026. This monumental initiative is being realized through the “Border Infrastructure Fund,” fueled by enthusiastic contributions from citizens across the country to strengthen national security and enhance the livelihoods of those living in remote areas.

According to the 13-month progress report starting from December 2024, technical teams have overcome challenging geographical obstacles to achieve numerous milestones:

• Mine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance has been conducted over more than 6 million square meters to ensure construction safety.
• Forest clearing for initial road access reached 241.6 kilometers, while excavation of road axes has covered 217.3 kilometers.
• Teams have completed gravel surfacing and compaction over 120.2 kilometers, alongside the construction of concrete bridges and numerous box culverts.

The pace of construction varies by province due to local geography; Mondulkiri has achieved over 91% completion, while Ratanakiri stands at approximately 51.8% due to more demanding mountainous terrain and valleys. As a symbolic marker of national identity, 936 palm tree seedlings—Cambodia’s national emblem—have been planted along the first section of the border road.

Beyond the benefits of safeguarding territorial integrity, this road will serve as a vital economic artery connecting the northeastern region to broader markets. It will facilitate easier travel for residents, streamline the transportation of agricultural products, and attract investment in agro-industry and eco-tourism, effectively transforming the border zone into a region of sustainable development.
