Border Ring Road Construction Project Progresses Significantly

The border ring road construction project, backed by a funding of nearly USD 27 million, has reached an impressive completion rate of approximately 53.30%. According to a recent press release from the working group overseeing the infrastructure initiative, significant milestones have been achieved in both Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri provinces.

In Mondulkiri province, 61 kilometers of the road have been completed, accounting for 56.64% of its designated section. Meanwhile, Ratanakiri province has successfully finished 24.90 kilometers, representing 48.48% of its segment. This progress highlights the commitment of the Royal Government of Cambodia to enhance regional connectivity through the border ring road (BRR) project.

As part of the project, the working group has also been actively engaged in ensuring safety along the construction site. A comprehensive search for mines and unexploded ordnance has been carried out, covering an area of 4,415,000 square meters—70.64% of the total area planned for inspection. This effort has resulted in the discovery of 79 bombs of various types, including 35 cluster munitions.

Additionally, the working group has successfully completed various civil engineering structures, including 23 box culverts totaling 236.70 meters, 178 concrete culverts, and 10 concrete drainage culverts measuring 221.80 meters.

Over the past seven months, the team has made considerable efforts in clearing the route for the border road. This includes clearing 5-meter-wide forested areas for a total length of 176.50 kilometers and 20-meter-wide paths for 151.20 kilometers to establish the road axis. Efforts also involved excavating valleys and streams, lowering mountain slopes, and constructing drainage canals extending 127.80 kilometers. Furthermore, mountain walls have been cut, rainwater drainage systems built, safety dams erected, and a roadbed constructed over a length of 124.80 kilometers, alongside the installation of a crushed stone mixture for 85.90 kilometers.

The construction of the 250-km border ring road officially commenced on November 1, 2024, with an expected completion date set for the end of April 2027.
