BYD to Establish Vehicle Assembly Plant in Sihanoukville Economic Zone

In a significant boost to Cambodia’s automotive industry, BYD, China’s leading electric car manufacturer, has announced plans to establish a vehicle assembly plant within the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone. The project, which involves an investment of USD 32 million, is expected to create over 200 jobs and contribute to the local economy.

The assembly plant is slated for completion in November this year and will cater to domestic needs and export markets. HE Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and first vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, confirmed the project and shared details during a meeting on 6 February. He revealed that the facility will produce two types of vehicles: electric and fuel-powered.

“BYD is preparing to build a vehicle assembly plant in the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, and by November, we anticipate seeing electric vehicles produced in Cambodia,” HE Sun Chanthol stated.

Initially, BYD will import components to be assembled locally, but plans are in place to gradually incorporate local components into the assembly process. This initiative highlights BYD’s commitment to the Cambodian market and demonstrates the country’s growing investor confidence and political stability.

In addition to the assembly plant, BYD established two service centers and aims to install 200 electric vehicle charging stations across various regions in Cambodia, further enhancing the infrastructure for electric vehicles.

With this investment, BYD joins the ranks of other prominent automotive manufacturers in Cambodia, including Ford, Toyota, and Hyundai, signaling a promising future for the nation’s automotive sector. The arrival of BYD in Cambodia is a pivotal step toward advancing the country’s automotive industry and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
