The announcement was made during a ceremony chaired by H.E. Dr. Eang Sophallet, Cambodia’s Minister of Environment, and H.E. Wang Wenbin, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Cambodia.

Ambassador Wang highlighted the project’s critical objectives, which include advancing research and conservation efforts for wild sphagnum moss species, as well as providing training and enhancing public awareness about the importance of nature conservation. He emphasized that this initiative will also generate more job opportunities for local communities, ensuring that the benefits of eco-tourism reach those who need them most.

In his remarks, Minister Eang Sophallet expressed gratitude to all national and international institutions that have contributed to the ongoing efforts in research, data compilation, and the conservation of wild sphagnum moss species. He expressed confidence that with strengthened collaboration, the project would successfully preserve Cambodia’s rich biodiversity.

As part of the initiative, the Ministry of Environment has outlined plans for the renovation of the Sok An Phnom Kulen Sphagnum Moss Research and Conservation Center. The project will be developed in 16 key areas, covering infrastructure development, research, education, animal husbandry, and various other mechanisms across a substantial area of 2,020 hectares.
