Enhanced ranger patrols and advanced monitoring technologies drive a fifteen percent drop in violations across protected landscapes while boosting legal accountability

Cambodia has marked a significant shift in its environmental protection efforts throughout 2025, reporting a notable decrease in natural resource crimes across the Kingdom. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Environment, authorities successfully suppressed 2,152 cases of environmental violations nationwide. This figure represents a 15 percent reduction compared to the previous year, a trend attributed to more rigorous enforcement and the strategic integration of modern surveillance technology into conservation practices.

The backbone of this successful crackdown has been an intensive patrol regime. Throughout the year, dedicated park rangers conducted 16,261 separate patrols within their respective jurisdictions, marking an increase of 1,855 operations over the 2024 period. These efforts resulted in the identification and processing of diverse crimes, including 751 forestry-related offenses and 737 wildlife crimes. Additionally, officials acted on 334 cases of illegal state land encroachment, 322 instances of illegal fishing, and 15 mineral resource violations.

A defining feature of the 2025 strategy was the deployment of advanced monitoring tools to stay ahead of perpetrators. The Ministry increasingly relied on satellite imagery and drone technology to pinpoint deforestation hotspots with high precision. These digital maps were shared across provincial administrations and with the National Commission for the Prevention and Suppression of Natural Resources Crime, allowing for rapid response and more accurate interventions in remote protected areas.

Beyond immediate field action, the government has emphasized long-term legal accountability. In 2025, judicial police officers compiled 133 comprehensive case files for court proceedings, leading to the referral of 95 suspects to the judicial system. This zero-tolerance approach aligns with the Ministry’s Circular Strategy on Environment 2023-2028, specifically focusing on its pillar of greenness to ensure sustainable management of protected lands and the livelihoods of local communities.

Collaborative efforts have also played a vital role in these achievements. The decline in offenses reflects a coordinated front involving the Ministry of Environment, local residents, non-governmental organizations like WWF-Cambodia, and the Anti-Corruption Unit. By fostering these partnerships and continuing to modernize enforcement through the Environmental and Natural Resource Code, Cambodia is working toward a future where its rich biodiversity and vital ecosystems are preserved for generations to come.
