Ministry of Environment and World Bank Join Forces to Protect Vast Ecological Landscapes

Cambodia is taking monumental strides toward a sustainable future, reinforcing its dedication to ecological preservation and green development. In a powerful demonstration of international cooperation, the Ministry of Environment and the World Bank have officially committed to strengthening natural resource management to drive the Kingdom’s sustainable development. This strategic alliance aims to fortify conservation efforts across more than 400,000 hectares of protected areas, safeguarding Cambodia’s rich biological diversity for generations to come.

According to an official update published by the World Bank on July 13, 2026, the joint commitment was solidified during a high-level meeting held between Guangzhe Chen, Vice President of the World Bank, and Eang Sophalleth, the Cambodian Minister of Environment. The discussion, which took place in early July, centered on the strategic management of Cambodia’s rich environmental resources and outlined the ongoing, robust support provided by the World Bank to the Kingdom’s green policies.

A primary focus of this collaborative effort is the acceleration of the Cambodia Sustainable Landscape and Ecotourism Project. Under this flagship initiative, both partners are working hand in hand to enhance the conservation and management of precisely 406,000 hectares of protected land. The project also focuses on expanding strategic planning for protected zones, developing nature-based tourism infrastructure, constructing nearly 98 kilometers of rural roads to improve access, and delivering enhanced sanitation services to more than 100,000 local community members.

Through this comprehensive framework, the World Bank and the Ministry of Environment are redefining how national ecosystems are valued. Both institutions emphasize that forests and natural ecosystems must not be treated merely as passive resources requiring protection, but as productive national assets. These landscapes play a vital role in securing water supplies, enhancing climate resilience, protecting biodiversity, generating local employment, and encouraging private-sector investment to fuel inclusive growth.
