Cambodia Launches 13 Million Dollar Coastal Infrastructure Initiative to Empower Local Fishing Communities

Deputy Prime Minister Say Samal presides over the groundbreaking of development projects in Kampot and Kep provinces designed to bolster tourism and sustainable livelihoods

The Royal Government of Cambodia has officially commenced a major infrastructure development project targeted at coastal communities in Kep and Kampot provinces. Valued at over 13 million dollars, the initiative was inaugurated on March 29, 2026, during a ceremony presided over by His Excellency Say Samal, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction.

According to the Ministry of Land Management, the project is a collaborative effort between the provincial working groups for Kampot and Kep, the Fisheries Administration, and the Land Allocation for Social and Economic Development Phase III (LASED III) team. The construction activities will benefit several coastal areas, specifically the fishing communities of Prek Thnot, Trapeang Ropov, Trapeang Sangke, and Kampong Samaki in Kampot, alongside the Ou Krasar community in Kep.

The investment is strategically designed to provide alternative and supplementary livelihoods for community members whose traditional income has been rooted in seasonal and traditional fishing. By modernizing local infrastructure, the government seeks to draw more tourists to these scenic coastal zones, thereby creating new revenue streams for residents and enhancing the overall socio-economic landscape of the region.

Technical specifications of the project include the development of essential public works such as concrete roads, robust drainage systems, and the expansion of clean water and electricity services. These enhancements are expected to significantly improve daily life for locals while providing the necessary foundation for small-scale businesses and eco-tourism ventures to flourish.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Say Samal highlighted the importance of these projects in bridging the gap between traditional practices and modern economic opportunities. He underscored the government’s long-term vision of transforming coastal communities into vibrant hubs of sustainable activity, ensuring that the benefits of national development reach even the most remote artisanal fishing villages.
