Cambodia-Australia Cooperation Strengthens Clean Water Security Amid Rising Climate Change Pressures

The 6th Cambodian Water Conference and Trade Exhibition Unveils Innovative Technologies and Strategic Partnerships to Ensure Sustainable Water Supply

Phnom Penh: Amid escalating global and regional pressures driven by climate change, the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, the Cambodian Water Supply Association, and the Australian Embassy in Cambodia jointly hosted the 6th Cambodian Water Conference and Trade Exhibition. Held from October 26 to 27, 2026, at the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel & Residence, the two-day premier event gathered approximately 350 representatives from government institutions, the water sector, development partners, financial bodies, research institutes, and technology providers.

Organized under the overarching theme “Today’s Innovation, Tomorrow’s Water Solutions,” the event served as a collaborative platform to share knowledge, showcase innovative water technologies, forge strategic partnerships, and identify practical solutions to enhance water security, expand clean water access, and foster climate-resilient services nationwide. The conference comes at a critical juncture as Cambodia faces mounting vulnerabilities associated with droughts, floods, and shifting precipitation patterns, which collectively strain existing water infrastructure and resources.

Addressing the opening ceremony, His Excellency Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, emphasized that leveraging advanced technologies and innovative management is no longer optional but a strategic necessity to optimize operational efficiency, mitigate risks, and guarantee high-quality, safe, sustainable, and affordable clean water supplies. Echoing this sentiment, His Excellency Derek Yip, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, highlighted that Australia’s decade-long clean water partnership with Cambodia has successfully enabled 1.3 million Cambodians to access piped clean water. He reaffirmed Australia’s ongoing commitment to supporting innovative technologies and sustainable financing mechanisms that empower water service operators to reach communities across the country.

Mr. Leng Khiev, President of the Cambodian Water Supply Association, noted that private water operators play an indispensable role in delivering services to communities, adding that the conference provides a vital venue for exploring new technologies, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring reliable, cost-effective water distribution. Notably, this year’s conference featured a dedicated business-matching platform for the first time, allowing operators, technology vendors, financial institutions, and development partners to actively pursue investment opportunities and collaborative solutions.

The steadfast commitment demonstrated by the Royal Government of Cambodia, alongside strategic international partnerships with nations like Australia through initiatives such as the Water Conference, lays a robust foundation for building a climate-resilient water sector. By advancing institutional capacities, integrating smart technologies, and streamlining financial ecosystems, Cambodia is effectively securing long-term water security and enhancing the health and prosperity of its citizens nationwide.
