A newly signed cooperation agreement for 2026 to 2028 focuses on climate resilience, forest restoration, and Article 6 carbon market development across Cambodia

Cambodia is reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable future through an expanded partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute, aimed at safeguarding national biodiversity and accelerating the Kingdom’s journey toward net-zero emissions. On July 28, 2026, Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth and GGGI Executive Director Sang-Hyup Kim officially signed a new cooperation agreement to implement the country planning framework for 2026 through 2028. The strategic accord establishes a shared roadmap for driving green economic expansion, protecting natural habitats, and fortifying environmental governance across the nation.

Under the framework, both institutions will collaborate closely to safeguard natural resources and execute practical climate action plans. A key priority of the agreement is leveraging Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change to develop robust carbon credit mechanisms and carbon trading projects. By linking natural resource conservation with green finance and carbon markets, the initiative seeks to catalyze international investment and support Cambodia’s overarching goal of achieving full carbon neutrality by 2050.

Expressing appreciation during the signing ceremony, Minister Eang Sophalleth commended GGGI for its unwavering support in strengthening Cambodia’s environmental resilience. He emphasized that expanding international cooperation on environmental management is essential for ensuring long-term sustainable development, promoting a clean and green landscape, and equipping local communities to adapt to climate challenges.

GGGI Executive Director Sang-Hyup Kim praised the Ministry of Environment for its visionary leadership in pursuing the 2050 carbon neutrality target. He commended the ministry’s ongoing efforts in forest restoration, climate change mitigation, and the establishment of carbon market frameworks aligned with international standards.
