GGGI Strengthens Commitment to Support Cambodia’s Carbon Neutrality Goal by 2050

The Global Green Development Institute (GGGI) reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with Cambodia to enhance the country’s capacity for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This commitment was highlighted during a meeting between HE Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, and Mr. Malle Fofana, GGGI’s Asia Director.

During the meeting, Mr. Fofana emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships to promote sustainable development and environmental conservation in Cambodia. He expressed GGGI’s readiness to translate its ambitious vision into actionable initiatives, particularly in assisting Cambodia in becoming an Accredited Entity of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). This accreditation is crucial for securing financial independence within the environmental sector.

In a response filled with appreciation, Minister Eang Sophallet thanked GGGI for its vital role in promoting a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Cambodia, which is pivotal in the global effort to mitigate climate change. He noted that the Carbon Trading Initiative, encompassing agriculture, waste management, and reforestation (REDD+), serves as a crucial incentive for investors. This initiative allows for reforestation efforts in exchange for carbon credits over a 15-year period, aligning with Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement and alleviating pressures on Cambodia’s state budget.

Minister Sophallet also announced ongoing efforts to enhance the management of liquid waste in Cambodia. By 2026, the Ministry of Environment plans to prohibit the discharge of liquid waste into public water sources, a significant step toward reducing pollution. Strict penalties will be enforced against factories and enterprises that fail to comply with environmental regulations.

As Cambodia progresses towards its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, the collaboration with GGGI underscores the importance of sustainable practices and the global commitment to tackling climate change.
