Five Cambodian Cities and Districts Honored as ASEAN Sustainable Cities 2025

In a significant achievement for Cambodia, five cities and districts have been awarded the prestigious ASEAN Sustainable Cities Award (ASEAN ESC AWARD) and the Clean Land, Clean Water, and Clean Air Certificate for 2025. This accolade highlights the nation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and urban development.

According to a post on the Ministry of Environment’s Facebook page, the recognition was announced on September 4, 2025, following the award ceremony held on September 3rd as part of the 18th ASEAN Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Langkawi, Malaysia. The event brought together environment ministers from across Southeast Asia to celebrate efforts in sustainable urbanization.

The five Cambodian locales celebrated for their achievements include:

  1. Siem Reap City – Recognized with the Environmental Sustainable City Award 2025.
  2. Sihanoukville City – Awarded the Chakra Economy Certificate.
  3. Takhmao City – Received the Clean Water Certificate.
  4. Tboung Khmum Township – Honored with the Clean Air Certificate.
  5. Ponhea Krek District – Also recognized with the Clean Water Certificate.

During the ceremony, HE Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, led the Cambodian delegation and expressed pride in the country’s advancements on the international stage. He emphasized that these awards reflect Cambodia’s effective implementation of strategies and policies aimed at fostering cleaner and more sustainable cities.

The recognition of these Cambodian cities and districts not only showcases the nation’s environmental efforts but also serves as an inspiration for continued improvement in urban sustainability across Southeast Asia.
