Gov’t vows to build more schools in response to increasing student numbers

The Cambodian Government has recently pledged to construct more schools across the country to cater to the growing number of students as the current number of schools in Cambodia is only 18,830.

During the graduation ceremony for more than 2,000 teachers, students and educators who successfully graduated from the National Institute of Education on 25 April 2023, PM Hun Sen emphasized the need to invest in education and pledged to use the national budget for education to increase teacher and education staff salaries, replace old school buildings, respond to student growth, and to build accommodation for students and teachers.

PM Hun Sen added that investing in education, health, and other areas is necessary to ensure social equity and benefit the people. This includes building roads accessible to both the rich and the poor and constructing schools that cater to all children, regardless of their background.

Data from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports for the 2022-2023 school year indicates that Cambodia currently has 8,607 kindergartens, 8,067 primary schools, 1,340 secondary schools, and 816 high schools.

Moreover, Cambodia has 19 vocational and technical educational institutions and 132 higher education institutions, of which 48 are state-owned and 84 are privately owned. There are also 20 provinces with a total of 205,636 students, 47.5% of whom are women.

The government’s investment in education is a positive step towards improving Cambodia’s human capital, which can potentially lead to long-term economic growth and prosperity.
