China Eyes Investment Opportunities in Cambodia’s Timber and Textile Industries

A delegation of Chinese investors from Beijing and Anhui Province has expressed a keen interest in investing in Cambodia’s plantation timber and textile industries. This follows a visit aimed at gaining insights into these sectors and the country’s investment landscape.

The meeting took place between His Excellency Lim Visal, Deputy Secretary-General of the Cambodia Investment Committee, and the Chinese delegation. During the discussions, representatives outlined their objectives, specifically focusing on understanding the full scope of investment opportunities from inception to execution in both industries.

H.E. Lim Visal welcomed the delegation’s interest, emphasizing the Cambodian government’s support for projects that align with the nation’s development goals, particularly those that are eligible for investment incentives under existing laws. He highlighted the significance of fostering a robust textile industry—covering everything from yarn to garment production—in alignment with government policies aimed at maximizing domestic raw material production. This approach aims to enhance value addition and fulfill export market needs more effectively.

Looking ahead, His Excellency remarked that such investments could serve as a catalyst for Cambodia’s economic growth, particularly as the country prepares to transition out of the Least Developed Country (LDC) group by the end of 2029. This transition comes with potential changes in export regulations, notably the European Community’s rules of origin that may require a two-stage transformation for exported goods.

In a broader context, the Council for the Development of Cambodia reported that in the first seven months of 2025, it has approved 440 new investment projects, with a total capital investment of approximately USD 6.7 billion. This surge in investment reflects Cambodia’s growing attractiveness as a destination for foreign direct investment across various sectors. (Read more)
