In a significant gesture of enduring friendship and collaboration, China has bestowed Cambodia with a substantial grant of 53.2 million yuan (US$7.3 million) earmarked for the renovation of the Friendship Building within the Council of Ministers, according to the official Facebook page of the Office of the Council of Ministers on 5 March 2024.

The official signing ceremony for this transformative initiative took place on 4 March 2024, with the agreement inked by HE Vongsey Visoth, Deputy Prime Minister overseeing the Council of Ministers, and Ms. Zhong Jie, Adviser to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Expressing the deepening ties between Cambodia and China, HE Vongsey Visoth emphasised the ongoing efforts to fortify the bonds of friendship and cooperation. This collaboration extends to key frameworks such as the Diamond Cooperation and the “2024 Initiative: A Year of People ExChange.” Within the expansive Belt and Road framework, both nations are actively engaged in various projects, including (1) the development of the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, (2) the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, and (3) the forthcoming Phnom Penh-Bavet and Phnom Penh-Siem Reap-Poipet Expressways. These endeavours collectively contribute to enhanced connectivity, a pivotal factor in fostering economic growth and generating employment opportunities.

Furthermore, China’s commitment to Cambodia extends beyond infrastructure projects to encompass critical socio-cultural sectors. The Moradok Techo National Stadium, Cambodia-China Friendship Hospital in Tbong Khmum Province, and various human resource development initiatives underscore the comprehensive nature of this enduring partnership.
