Construction begins on US$17-billion nuclear power plant in China

China National Nuclear Power has started the construction on its US$17-billion project of installing two Russian-designed reactors at the Xudabao nuclear power station in Liaoning Province, northeast China, reported GCR on 6 August.

Xudabao 3 is a cooperation between China and Russian. Under the agreement signed in 2018, Rosatom’s subsidiary Atomstroyexport would provide two of its flagship reactors to the Xudabao power station.

Rosatom will also design the nuclear island and supply steam generators, cooling pumps, piping and pressurizers. It will also supervise the construction and commissioning of the reactors. The remainder of the plant, including the turbines, will be handled by China.

This project is expected to be completed in the next six years.

The Xudabao nuclear site has been developed in 2010 using Chinese reactors, but work was delayed by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
