Construction of US$190 million Bakeng Water Treatment Plant 50% Complete

Construction of the Bakeng water treatment plant, Cambodia’s largest plant with a treatment capacity of 195,000 m3/day, has reached 50% completion as of January.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed and put into operation in 2023 to meet the increasing demand of Phnom Penh and Takhmao city, the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA) announced in mid-January.

The population growth and increase in construction projects in Phnom Penh and Takhmao city have led to the spike in clean water demand, said PPWSA.

The water demand is currently more than 700,000 m3 / day, but the production capacity is only 600,000 m3/ day, PPWSA added.

The Bakeng water treatment plant is the largest water treatment plant ever built in Cambodia and will be implemented in two phases. The first phase is scheduled for completion by early 2023, with the capacity to produce approximately 200,000 m3/ day of clean water, while the second phase will expand the total capacity to almost 400,000 m3/ day by the first quarter of 2024.

Co-funded by the French Agency for Development and the European Investment Bank the project has an investment value of over US$190 million.

Ground was broken on the project on 1 February 2021 under the ausipices of Prime Minister Hun Sen after a four-year feasibility study which began in 2017. (Read more)
