Digital Twins and IoT Spark a New Era in Mining Intelligence

According to a new industry report from Bentley Systems, 88% of mining organizations now recognize digital twins as high-impact technology, with nearly 90% already implementing or planning projects.

For decades, mining data has been trapped in silos—split between geological reports, manual inspections, and disconnected sensors. The industry is now pivoting toward “Evergreen Digital Twins,” virtual replicas of mine sites that integrate real-time IoT data.

This shift is driven by a surge in automated monitoring. 72% of condition monitoring data is currently collected automatically. That figure is expected to hit 80% within the next two years. Besides, 82% of mine owners report that this automation significantly reduces project costs.

As global demand for critical minerals like lithium and copper skydives, mining companies face mounting pressure to improve safety and meet strict decarbonization goals. Digital twins allow engineers to move from reactive to predictive maintenance by visualizing slope stability, pore pressure, and environmental shifts as they happen.

The practical benefits are already visible on the ground. At the Waihi Mine in New Zealand, operators struggled with fragmented geotechnical records. By implementing a cloud-based 3D digital twin using Bentley and Seequent software, the mine unified its sensor data with geological models.

The results included faster response times to stability triggers during heavy rainfall, streamlined compliance and audit reporting, and improved cross-disciplinary collaboration between geologists and field teams.

The industry’s “coming of age” suggests that the gap between physical assets and digital insights is closing. For operators, the focus is no longer just on collecting data, but on creating a “single source of truth” to manage the high-stakes risks of modern extraction.
