Feasibility Shows ‘Okay’ to Bassac – Kampot Waterway

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has announced that the feasibility study of the Tonle Bassac waterway and logistics project has been completed, with no major technical, environmental, or legal issues found.

The study was conducted by CCCC Water Transportation Consultants Co., Ltd, and its progress was discussed at a meeting between the ministry’s General Department of Water Transport and China Roads and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) on March 3, chaired by Senior Minister HE Sun Chanthol.

The ministry said that the project is in full compliance with the technical standards and international conventions related to water transport.

During the feasibility study, all stakeholders worked together in the field, discussing and examining the impacts of all kinds of physical infrastructure that may be affected by project development.

The ministry stated that the waterway and logistics project, which has a total length of about 180 kilometers connecting the Tonle Bassac to the seaport of Kampot province, will be a driving force to change the face of Cambodia’s inland waterway transport sector on the international stage and bring greater benefits to the national economy.

The project is aimed at boosting Cambodia’s inland waterway transport sector to a higher level of efficiency, reducing the maximum pressure of heavy road transport, facilitating internal integration, and strengthening and expanding regional and international connectivity through transportation. Water, sea, and port transport will be easier, smoother, and more efficient.

The company and the ministry will prepare a report on the achievement, including the Master Plan, Action Plan, and Priority Plan to be discussed at an inter-ministerial commission meeting before being submitted to the Office of the Council of Ministers.
