France & EU Set to Boost Phnom Penh Water Supply’s Capacity for Clean Water Development

The French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union are gearing up to enhance the capabilities of the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA) initiative to strengthen Cambodia’s water sector, starting in early 2025.

This plan, aimed at advancing the Sixth Sustainable Development Goal of universal access to clean water and improved sanitation, was announced after discussions on 14 October 2024 involving HE Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

During the discussions, Mrs Sandrine Boucher, AFD Country Director for Cambodia, underlined AFD’s long-standing commitment to Cambodia’s water sector, noting its involvement for over 30 years. As part of this new phase, a team of experts from AFD will conduct a feasibility study on reforming Cambodia’s water management practices, which will also commence in early 2025.

The EU co-funded this technical assistance effort, aligning with the Second European Common Strategy for Development Cooperation, prioritizing water sector reform.

Insights gained from the meeting with HE Hem Vandy and PPWSA’s management have informed us of this initiative’s scope and anticipated outcomes. Participants reaffirmed their dedication to supporting the project’s successful implementation, reinforcing Cambodia’s water infrastructure, and advancing sustainable development efforts.
