French Architect Proposes World’s Tallest Carbon Sink Tower in New York

French architecture firm Rescubika has recently proposed an over 730-metre-tall carbon sink tower in Manhattan called Mandragora. If built, the project will become the world’s tallest environmentally friendly skyscraper, covered in over 10,000 plants and absorbing more CO2 than it releases.

With a design inspired by the mandrake plant, Mandragora goes beyond being carbon-neutral but instead will become a carbon-negative building. The tower will be powered by 36 wind turbines and nearly 23,000 square feet of solar panels.

This 160-floor tower will also be built with organic materials and decorated with 83,000 square feet of “plant walls” which can bring more greenery to the façade.

The tower combines both residential and commercial functions. Each apartment will also include an office, where occupants are encouraged to work from home, if possible, to save the carbon emissions associated with commuting.

The architects wanted this building to visually represent a connection between humankind and nature, despite its location in one of the world’s biggest metropolises. This building represents design in response to the idea of “the city of tomorrow,” which would theoretically become carbon neutral by 2050.
