Gov’t to Build More Infrastructure to Connect Main Economic Poles & Cities

The Cambodian government is in need of building more physical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, highways and high-speed rail to serve transportation, support economic growth throughout the country, reduce poverty and increase people’s income. 

In the inauguration ceremony of a new road in Sihanoukville on 22 December, Cambodia Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen announced many planned infrastructure projects from bridges, to expressways, high-speed railways, and underground trains, among others.  

“We have to try our endeavour to make strong internal connections to serve the socio-economic development. Having this, we will reduce the difficulties of the people, leading to reduce poverty and increase the income of our people,”  he said. 

According to PM Hun Sen, the government is studying to build a road for the connection between Battambang and Siem Reap, the expressway between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and the expressway connecting Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville and from Sihanoukville to the border of Thailand. 

“If we decide to do, it will not take long because we already have the old railway, this old railway cannot serve economic development and we may have high-speed rail elsewhere,” he said. 

He stated that despite the COVID-19 crisis, the government is still making efforts to develop infrastructure throughout the country.
