India Plans to Establish Cashew Processing Plant in Kampong Thom

In a significant boost to agribusiness ties between India and Cambodia, the Agriculture and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA) of India has unveiled plans to set up a state-of-the-art cashew processing plant in Kampong Thom province. This initiative is aimed at streamlining the export of processed cashew nuts to the Indian market.

The announcement was made during a high-level meeting on September 8, 2025, between H.E. Toch Bunhour, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and Dr. Sudhanshu, Secretary of APEDA. The discussions centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation and uncovering new investment opportunities within Cambodia’s agricultural sector.

The Indian delegation expressed keen interest in bolstering trade relations by increasing the import of fresh Cambodian cashew nuts to India, recognizing the untapped potential of local crops. “Kampong Thom has a wealth of high-quality cashew varieties such as M23, M10, H09, and IM4, making it an ideal location for our processing facility,” said Dr. Sudhanshu.

Cambodia’s Secretary of State reassured the Indian partners of the country’s welcoming stance toward foreign investment, highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to agribusiness development. “We are excited about this partnership and believe that it will facilitate the growth of agri-trade between our nations,” he remarked.

Following their discussions, the Indian delegation engaged with local businesses and toured Kampong Thom province, further assessing the region’s agricultural prospects. This move marks a crucial step forward in strengthening economic ties and creating new opportunities for both countries in the cashew trade sector.

As Cambodia continues to establish itself as a leading producer of high-quality cashews, this collaboration with India is anticipated to elevate the agricultural landscape while benefiting local farmers and boosting exports.
