Historic Sihanouk-Hun Sen Peace Talks Commemorated with New Garden Naming in France

The town of Fere-en-Tardenois honors the legacy of Cambodia’s Late King Father and the origins of the nation’s peace process

The French town of Fere-en-Tardenois has officially named one of its public gardens the Norodom Sihanouk Garden to honor the deep historical ties and the enduring friendship between Cambodia and France. According to a press release from the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in France issued on December 22, 2025, the municipal council of Fere-en-Tardenois, located in the Aisne department, voted to formalize this designation at the town hall garden. This gesture serves as a permanent tribute to the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk and his pivotal role in international diplomacy.

The selection of Fere-en-Tardenois carries profound historical weight as it was the site of the first landmark negotiations between the Late King Father Norodom Sihanouk and Samdech Techo Hun Sen in December 1987. At the time, Samdech Techo Hun Sen served as the Prime Minister of the then People’s Republic of Kampuchea. This encounter, often referred to as the Sihanouk-Hun Sen talks, is widely recognized by historians as the critical starting point for the Cambodian peace process.

The initial dialogue in this French town broke years of political deadlock and paved the way for subsequent negotiations that eventually led to the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements. By naming the garden after the Late King Father, the local French authorities are not only celebrating a historical figure but also acknowledging the beginning of national reconciliation and the end of decades of conflict in Cambodia. This symbolic act further strengthens the cultural and diplomatic bonds that continue to thrive between the two nations nearly four decades after those first historic steps toward peace were taken on French soil.
