Japan Grants Cambodia Over US$1 Billion to Construct Techo Santepheap Museum in Siem Reap

The Cambodian government is set to construct the illustrious Techo Peace Museum in Siem Reap, with the generous backing of the Japanese government contributing over US$1 billion. This extraordinary initiative seeks to illuminate Cambodia’s rich history, its struggles with war, and the precious gift of peace.

The Director General of the Cambodian Mine Action Center, Mr Heng Ratana, unveiled on 5 October the imminent commencement of construction for the Techo Santepheap Museum, scheduled to begin in November 2023. This awe-inspiring project is earmarked for completion in mid-2025, promising to be a beacon of knowledge and reflection.

Sprawling over a vast 12-hectare expanse in Trapeang Thom commune, Bakong district, Siem Reap province, the museum’s strategic location near the Siem Reap Angkor Thmey International Airport and National Road 6A is poised to make it a prominent cultural landmark. With an astonishing price tag of US$1.717 million, graciously furnished by the Japanese government, the Techo Peace Museum is poised to be a testament to the enduring bonds between nations.

The mission of the Techo Peace Museum extends far beyond bricks and mortar. It aspires to curate and present the profound tapestry of Cambodia’s history, the harrowing memories of war, and the immeasurable value of peace. This undertaking is not just for the national populace; it seeks to be a guiding light for generations of young Cambodians, imparting the lessons of peace and nurturing an aversion to the scourge of war.
