Japan grant US$18M to Cambodia to develop water supply system in southwest of Phnom Penh

Cambodia has received a loan of 2,482 million yen (approximately US$ 18.24 million) from Japan for the implementation of the second phase of the project to improve and rehabilitate Phnom Penh’s southwestern irrigation and drainage system. The loan agreement was signed between His Excellency Prak Sokhon, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and His Excellency UENO ATSUSHI, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia on 10 April 2023.

The project, which started construction in March 2019 and was launched in July 2021, includes an underground reservoir with a capacity of 65,000 cubic meters and a new pumping station capable of pumping 1.4 cubic meters per second. The development of this project aims to stop the flooding in the area around and north of Wat Phnom, including Street 47, Street 90, and Street 92. (Read more)

With this loan from Japan, Cambodia is set to further develop its water supply system and infrastructure to support the growing needs of the country. It is expected to improve the living conditions of the people in the southwestern part of Phnom Penh, further promoting the city’s economic growth and development.
