Japan Provides Us$30 Million Grant for Construction of Water Treatment Plant

The Japanese government has agreed to provide a US$30 million grant to the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft to strengthen the capacity of the clean water supply system in Kampong Thom province, according to a press release from 27 March 2019.

On 26 March 2019, H.E Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft, and Mr Arakawa Noriyuki, Director of Kubota Construction Co., Ltd. signed a framework agreement for the expansion of the water supply system and construction of a water treatment plant in Kampong Thom.

Based on the agreement, this clean water supply system in Kampong Thom will see construction of a water treatment plant with the capacity to generate up to 7,500 cubic metres of clean water per day with a distribution network approximately 152 kilometres long.

However, the same source did not confirm additional information such as the construction date and location.

“The Royal Government of Cambodia aims to supply clean water to rural areas by 2023 to provide clean water in 90% of urban areas and by 2025 it will meet the target of 100%,” said H.E Cham Prasidh.

Cambodia currently has a US$350 million water treatment plant in the progress of tendering for bids. This project will be able to generate up to 400,000 cubic metres of clean water per day to support around 50,000 households. Read more
