Kia Explores Ambitious Plans for First ASEAN Production Hub in Thailand

South Korea’s automotive giant, Kia Corp, is actively contemplating the establishment of its inaugural production facility in Thailand. This ambitious venture is set to boast an impressive annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles, significantly enhancing Kia’s presence in the Southeast Asian market. Channel News Asia reported this development on 8 September 2023.

Kia, renowned as a sister company to Hyundai Motor Co., is poised to engage in substantive discussions with the Thai government regarding this momentous investment. Speculations suggest that an investment agreement could be inked later this year, potentially paving the way for construction commencement in the first half of the following year.

In response to inquiries, a Kia spokesperson informed Reuters that while the company operates on a global scale, it is meticulously evaluating strategies to tap into diverse international markets. However, the prospect of establishing a factory in Thailand is yet to be conclusively decided.

Kia’s existing overseas production facilities, strategically distributed across the U.S., China, India, Slovakia, and Mexico, underscore the brand’s commitment to a global footprint. Should the plans materialise, the Thailand factory will stand as Kia’s sixth global production stronghold.

As the automotive industry continually evolves, Kia’s potential foray into Thailand signifies its dedication to serving the dynamic ASEAN market. This expansion not only reflects Kia’s vision for growth but also has the potential to foster economic development and job creation within Thailand.
