Ministry of Environment Launches National Road Clean-Up Campaign Across Cambodia

The Ministry of Environment has announced an extensive campaign aimed at cleaning up litter on 126 national roads across Cambodia. This initiative, named “National Roads Free of Garbage and Plastic Waste,” was officially launched by HE Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, as part of a broader effort to promote environmental responsibility among citizens.

During the launch of the action plan, Minister Sophallet emphasised that the campaign is designed to support the “Clean Cambodia, Khmer Can Do It” initiative, which encourages communal efforts to enhance the cleanliness of the environment, including the areas surrounding villages, schools, temples, and other public spaces.

The ministry’s campaign will focus on the active participation of all stakeholders to ensure that national roads are kept clean and free from litter and plastic waste by the end of 2025. The initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the beautification of cities and towns along the major roadways.

The action plan will be implemented across various capitals and provinces in Cambodia, prioritising 126 key sections of national roads that collectively span approximately 6,309.57 kilometres. Minister Sophallet reiterated the importance of collaboration among communities and organisations to make this endeavour successful.

Looking back at past efforts, the ministry highlighted the success of the 2024 plastic reduction campaign, which successfully decreased plastic imports by over 80% and led to an approximate 80% reduction in garbage and plastic litter on roads in 11 provinces compared to the previous year.
