Oddar Meanchey’s Coal-fired Power Plant 60% Complete, Online by 2021

The 265-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Oddar Meanchey province is now 60% complete and is scheduled to go online by 2021, according to Director of the Department of Mines and Energy of Oddar Meanchey Province Mr Phon Len on 11 November.

Mr Phon Len told Cambodia National Radio that construction on this coal-fired power plant is 60% complete, while EDC is now studying the impact and speeding up the construction of a high-voltage transmission line from Oddar Meanchey to Siem Reap. Meanwhile, the whole project will be completed in 2021 as planned.

He added that according to the plan, the project would be launched in two phases; the first 130 megawatts will be operational by the end of 2021, and the full 265 megawatts by the end of 2022.

Once completed, the power plant will use more than 3,000 kcal of recycled coal to generate electricity, which will be able to cover both Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap provinces.

This 265 MW coal-fired power plant was approved by the National Assembly with 109 votes in favour on 26 March 2020. This project is being constructed by Han Seng Coal Mine Company. (Read more and more)

Regarding the rapid growth of coal power plants in Cambodia, some major brands including H&M, Adidas, Puma, Gap, and others have expressed concern and reluctance to continue investing in Cambodia over environmental concerns, according to the Nikkei Review Asia on 12 August. (Read more)
