PM Hun Manet emphasised the importance of this project, stating, “… We will push for the opening of the construction site of Funan Techo canal on 5 August …”

He also urged land buyers to refrain from purchasing land along the canal project route, as it could complicate governmental efforts related to the project.

Contrary to some public misconceptions, the PM clarified that the Funan Techo Canal project is not entirely funded by foreign loans. Approximately 51% of the investment comes from Cambodian investors, primarily public companies, including the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port and the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port Company. The project is structured as a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) initiative, with private investors borrowing from banks and securing operational rights for 50 years before transferring ownership to the state.

This ambitious project will connect the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port directly to the seaport of Kep province through a canal that is the largest in Cambodia’s history, measuring 100 metres in width and 5.4 metres in depth, capable of accommodating cargo ships up to 3,000 DWT. (Read more)
