Phnom Penh Airport to facilitate parking for 42 aircraft by December

Phnom Penh International Airport recently announced construction of parking slots for 12 additional aircraft, on an area commonly known as Apron B at an estimated cost of US$ 8 million.

The slots will be primarily used for long-term aircraft parking, and by December there will be an additional 30 for aircraft – “C”, A320 and B737. According to Cambodia Airports, this provide Phnom Penh International Airport a total capacity of 42 parking stands, which will support further traffic growth for next year.

Given that Phnom Penh International Airport is mainly used for and limited to small and medium-sized aircraft, this is one of the reasons why the US$1.5 billion Phnom Penh New Airport project is being built on 2,600 hectares in Kandal and Takeo province.

A civil aviation spokesman told the AKP earlier this year that when the new airport was completed, it would be used for large aircraft able to fly for 12 to 16 hours, such as to Europe or or the United States. With the ability for swift turn around on such aircraft, the new multi-hectare facility will be able to compete with Singapore’s Changi or Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi airport.

Cambodia’s three airports, Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, currently fly to 55 destinations, and welcome 700 regular flights per week. In 2017, the number of passengers going through Cambodia’s international airports totalled 8.8 million, according to a Cambodia Airports press release.
