Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway Breaks Ground in June 2023, Boosting Cambodia’s Connectivity

The long-awaited Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway is set to break ground on June 7, 2023, as announced by HE Sun Chanhtol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport. The 135-kilometer expressway, which is the second to connect Cambodia’s capital to Bavet City, Svay Rieng province, is expected to boost the country’s connectivity and promote economic growth.

In an inauguration ceremony of a vehicle technical inspection center in Phnom Penh on 21 April HE Sun Chanhtol stated that the groundbreaking ceremony would be held under the presidency of Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia. The expressway will be built by China Road and Bridge Cooperate (CRBC), the same firm that built the first Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway.

The expressway will pass through Kandal, Prey Veng, and Svay Rieng provinces, starting from the capital’s third ring road and ending at Bavet town on the Cambodian-Vietnamese border. The project, which is estimated to cost US$1,638 million, is slated for completion in 2027.

The new expressway is expected to improve travel times, reduce congestion on existing roads, and enhance logistics efficiency, thereby boosting economic development in the region. It is also poised to attract investors and stimulate trade between Cambodia and Vietnam.
