Cambodia’s PM Calls Upon Japan’s Help for Infrastructure Development

Samdech Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, extended a request to Japan for collaboration in advancing the nation’s road and bridge infrastructure. The request was made in a pivotal moment at the groundbreaking ceremony for the inaugural phase of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port’s deep-water port on 22 December 2023.

This request aligns with the ongoing construction of the deep-water port, made possible through a concessional loan from the Japanese government. Prime Minister Hun Manet specifically urged Japan to consider enhancing and upgrading National Road No. 1 leading to the Neak Leung Bridge. Additionally, he proposed exploring the feasibility of constructing a bridge spanning from Kdei Takuy to Arey Ksat.

During his address, the Prime Minister stated, “I would like to ask Japan, through the Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan, to examine the possibility of supporting further road and bridge development, such as the National Road Number 1 Expansion Project and the project to build a bridge across the Mekong River between Kdei Takuy and Arey Ksat.”

Acknowledging Japan’s profound contributions to Cambodia’s connectivity landscape, the Prime Minister emphasised the significance of Japan’s role in fostering infrastructural development within the country. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for Japan’s consistent contributions to Cambodia’s past, present, and future development.
