Private Firm Mulls Establishing New Cement Factory in Kampong Speu

A private firm is conducting a feasibility study to build a new cement factory in Kampong Speu province. If built, the factory will be the first one in Kampong Speu and the sixth one nationwide.

Kampong Speu Governor Vei Samnang said yesterday that the project is proposed in response to increasing the demand construction sector.

“Given the availability of the natural resources in the province, we allowed the private firm to study a while ago. It would be great to have the first cement factor in Kampong Speu,” said HE Samnang.

“The firm has been studying for a long time already but has yet to finalise their decisions as they have to get approval from the Ministry of Mines and Energy and other relevant ministries. However, I expect Kampong Speu will see a cement factory soon enough,” he added.

HE Vei Samnang also stated that if the factory is established, it will help reduce cement imports and more importantly will help create jobs for local people.

Currently, there are five cement factories in Cambodia located in Kampot and Battambang province, with a total production capacity of about 8 million tons per year. (Read more)
