Stung Prek Tnaot Rehabilitation Project Nears Completion with 95% Progress

The Stung Prek Tnaot Rehabilitation Project in the lower part from the east of National Road 3 has reached an impressive 95% completion and is on track to be finished by June or July this year. This update was shared on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology on 25 May 2024.

The Stung Prek Tnaot Irrigation and Flood Protection Project encompasses four major initiatives:

  1. Rehabilitation of 26km of Stung Prek Tnaot.
  2. Rehabilitation of 3.5km of Prek Hoor by laying stones at the bottom of the canal and reinforcing the banks.
  3. Rehabilitation of a 3.7km canal with concrete lining at the bottom and supporting walls on both sides.

Meanwhile, the Prek Peam Satha Rehabilitation Project, which is part of the larger effort to manage and divert water from Phnom Penh, has achieved 65% completion. This project began in mid-December 2023 and is scheduled for completion by 20 August 2024. The project spans approximately 19km, from Boeung Ta Mok to the exit of Prek Peam Satha in Khan Prek Pnov, Phnom Penh, and Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province.

The comprehensive flood relief system to prevent flooding in Phnom Penh is being implemented in three phases. The first and second phases include:

  1. Improvement of 51km of small rivers.
  2. Rehabilitation of Stung Krom and Tonle Bati, spanning 7km.
  3. Enhancement of the Choeung Ek canal, covering 27.5km.
  4. Upgrading canals 59 and 90, totalling 18.8km.
  5. Improvement of canals 96 and Prek Kong, spanning 34km.
  6. Rehabilitation of Prek Peam Satha, measuring 18.7km.
  7. Upgrading the Roleang Chrey-Slakou canal, covering 58.45km.
  8. Connecting the O Khsach canal to the northern lakes of Ta Mok, totalling 27.7km.

These projects highlight the government’s commitment to improving irrigation and flood protection infrastructure in Phnom Penh and surrounding areas. The successful completion of these initiatives will significantly enhance water management and mitigate flood risks, ensuring better living conditions for the residents.
