Tech Pivot Saves Germany’s First All-Digital Highway Project

A landmark infrastructure project in Germany is back on track and shattering efficiency records after a critical mid-course correction in its digital strategy.

Viscan GmbH, the company tasked with creating a “digital twin” for the B29 highway expansion in Baden-Württemberg, successfully rescued the project from technical failure by overhauling its data processing systems.

The ambitious project aimed to document construction progress daily across nine new structures, including bridges and retaining walls. While Viscan’s team used advanced drones and scanners to capture site data, their original cloud-based software couldn’t handle the massive workload.

This technical bottleneck caused poor data accuracy and forced experts to perform slow, manual repairs on digital maps, threatening the project’s tight deadlines.

Recognizing that their digital backbone was failing, Viscan CEO Nicolai Nolle pivoted the company’s strategy to partner with Bentley Systems. By switching to the iTwin Capture engine, the team automated their data processing and eliminated the need for manual corrections.

This new foundation allowed Viscan to integrate artificial intelligence that automatically detects site changes, which are then verified by human experts to ensure 100% accuracy.

The results of this technological shift have been immediate and significant. The new workflow is 70% faster for onsite documentation and has contributed to a 20% reduction in overall construction time. Additionally, the high-quality digital maps have allowed for a 50% increase in remote supervision, reducing the need for physical site visits.

By choosing more reliable tools rather than lowering their standards, Viscan transformed a potential failure into a blueprint for future infrastructure. The project has successfully delivered 40,000 reality models to customers in just six months, proving that a solid digital foundation is essential for modern construction.
