Boeung Ra in Battambang Chosen as Green City Oasis, Pioneering Sustainable Development

The provincial authorities of Battambang have designated Boeung Ra, situated in the vicinity of the railway station, as a pivotal wetland for the visionary Green City infrastructure project. The International Center for Environmental Management (ICEM) is diligently studying this transformative initiative, as discussed during the productive working meeting on Natural Based Solutions (NBS) for climate-resilient investments in the Mekong region on 8th June 2023.

The purpose of the Boeung Ra NBS project is multifaceted. Firstly, it serves as a natural reservoir to mitigate local floods and act as an emergency water reserve, capturing the water flow from the Sangker River.

Furthermore, it aims to enhance the quality of water used within households and floodplains. Through the integration of natural solutions, such as the creation of urban parks to promote biodiversity, eco-tourism, and aesthetic appeal, the former train station will be transformed into a captivating tourist attraction, harmonizing with the overall NBS endeavors.

HE Sok Loo, Governor of Battambang Province, affirmed that although this groundbreaking project is yet to be implemented due to budgetary constraints for preliminary studies, it remains a top priority that will be realized once sufficient funding is secured. The provincial authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to sustainable urban planning and the promotion of a green and resilient Battambang.

Alongside the Boeung Ra initiative, Battambang province will witness the completion of a comprehensive wastewater disposal system on both sides of the river in Battambang City by the end of 2024. This commendable endeavor, supported by a substantial loan of nearly USD 60 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), will significantly contribute to the city’s infrastructural development and pave the way for a greener and more livable urban environment.
