Poipet’s Transformation: Government Invests US$78 Million in Enthralling City Project

Poipet, a bustling city known for its international gateway, is on the path to becoming a captivating and civilized destination, thanks to a comprehensive city-wide project backed by a substantial investment of US$78 million.

Governor Keat Hul of Poipet City revealed in an interview with the National Radio of Cambodia on 13 June that the Royal Government has outlined two crucial policies to drive the development of Poipet, in response to the growing number of residents and tourists passing through the Poipet International Gate.

The first policy entails the formulation of an urban development master plan, serving as the foundation for systematic and integrated investment in urban infrastructure. This encompasses the enhancement of roads, electricity, water, digital connectivity, and waste management systems, including solid waste and wastewater treatment.

The second policy focuses on establishing clear organizational arrangements, delineating the roles and responsibilities of each institution involved in managing operations and upholding the achievements gained from the investments. Additionally, efforts are underway to bolster the capacity of officials responsible for executing these plans.

Currently, the Poipet city authorities are diligently implementing the “Desirable City Plan,” a national project with four key objectives. These include the development of a comprehensive drainage system, road construction projects, the establishment of a landfill, and the implementation of a wastewater treatment project.

Notably, the ongoing sewer development project has already proven effective in mitigating flooding within Poipet City.

When asked about the project’s progress, Governor Hul confirmed the completion of several initiatives while acknowledging that work on other projects is still in progress. The city and commune working groups are actively engaged in constructing the wastewater treatment system and sewer system, with the aim of efficiently redirecting floodwaters away from the city within a day.

This ambitious project reflects the city’s determination to evolve into a vibrant and sustainable destination that offers unparalleled experiences for residents, tourists, and businesses alike. As progress continues, Poipet is poised to shine as a shining example of urban development in Cambodia.
