Rapid Progress of Riverbank Construction in Kampong Cham Achieves 65%

In a remarkable display of swift action and engineering prowess, the construction of a vital riverbank in the Srey Santhor district has surged ahead, reaching an impressive 65% completion in under a month.

The project in Moan Dob Leu village, Meanchey commune, commenced on 23 December 2024, following the alarming collapse of the Mekong River bank behind Wat Sotsanaream on 12 October 2024. The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has proactively addressed the urgency of the situation, recognizing the vulnerability of the fine sand to the relentless flow of water.

According to the latest report from the ministry, as of 7 January 2025, over 200 meters of the river bank have been fortified. Key progress highlights include 100% completion in protecting the lower bank and significant advancements in stabilizing the slope with sandbags, reaching 35% completion.

The construction is strategically divided into two phases. The first phase focuses on securing the lower leg with geotextile sandbags, while the second phase will aim to reinforce the upper bank once the lower foundation is secure. This careful planning reflects the commitment to ensuring the safety and sustainability of the riverbank for years to come.

As the community watches the construction unfold, there is a sense of relief and hope that this initiative will protect local residents and their livelihoods from the risk of future erosion. The ministry’s timely intervention highlights the importance of responsible water management and infrastructure development in safeguarding our natural resources.
