Funan Techo Canal Construction Set to Begin during the low water season this year

The long-awaited construction of the Funan Techo Canal is scheduled to officially commence during the low water season at the end of 2025. This announcement was made by His Excellency Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, during a visit to the project site in Kep province on July 25, 2025.

During his visit, His Excellency confirmed the complete verification of regulations and the marking of land boundaries for the canal project, achieving a milestone of 100% completion as of July 25. The marking process involved collaboration across several provinces, including Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep, with a total of 1,920 boundary markers installed.

Following the official site announcement in the past, construction of the Funan Techo Canal is progressing according to plan. His Excellency noted that machinery will begin mobilizing for construction after the Ministry of Economy’s working group resolves the necessary impacts and compensations owed to affected citizens.

The Funan Techo Canal, which spans a total length of 180 kilometers, is designed to facilitate maritime transport and accommodate vessels weighing up to 3,000 DWT. The waterway, which officially opened on August 5, 2024, passes through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces, marking a significant project for Cambodian infrastructure development. (Read more)
