Cambodia’s Tourism Soars: Nearly Half a Million Chinese Tourists in 2023

In a remarkable surge for Cambodia’s tourism sector, the first 11 months of 2023 witnessed an influx of 498,250 Chinese tourists, constituting a noteworthy 10.1% of the total international tourist arrivals, according to the publication of the Chinese news website XINHUANET on 25 December 2023.

A report by the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism indicates that between January and November 2023, Cambodia hosted a total of 4.91 million international tourists, underscoring the country’s growing appeal as a travel destination.

China, emerging as a robust contributor to Cambodia’s tourism landscape, ranks third among the leading sources of foreign tourists, following Thailand and Vietnam. With 1.65 million Thai tourists and 920,093 Vietnamese tourists, Cambodia’s tourism diversity reflects its ability to attract visitors from various regions.

HE Top Sopheak, spokesperson and Secretary of State at the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia, expressed the nation’s desire to welcome more Chinese tourists, recognising their significant role in Cambodia’s economic development and the tourism sector, contributing to poverty reduction. He also expressed confidence in the newly inaugurated Chinese-invested Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, anticipating a boost in Chinese tourist arrivals. (Read more)
