Japan Continues to Promote Health and Work Safety for Construction Work

Japan will continue to help Cambodia to improve the quality of construction work until 2020.

According to a Facebook post by the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training (MLVT) on 27 September, 2018, Japan has decided to continue supporting Cambodia on the project that will promote health standards and work safety for the construction sector from 2018-2020 following the success of the first project which recently ended.

The announcement was made during a meeting between H.E IthSamheng, Minister of MLVT and H.E Jiro KAWASAKI, Member of Parliament and former Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan.

According to H.E Leng Tong, director of the Labour Ministry’s occupational health and safety department, the project has four main objectives comprising of:

1. The 2nd project will use the consultation mechanism and other mechanisms in order to achieve the project goals.
2. Organise a legal framework and other regulations related to occupational health and safety, especially construction.
3. Strengthen work inspections at construction sites and improve working conditionson sites
4. Promote awareness among workers and employers through the development of training courses such as improving the working conditions for small construction sites and improving employment conditions for small and medium enterprises.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) in collaboration with the Construction Association of Cambodia (CCA) have been working on a safety handbook for construction site workers aimed at ensuring safety for workers and quality construction. (Read more )
