Japan Finishes Study on Clean Water System Development Masterplan 2020-2030

Cambodia’s clean water system development master plan from 2020 to 2030 has been recently completed by a Japanese team and is set to be implemented gradually phase by phase.

Director-General of Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority HE Long Naro said on 1 March that Japan has already helped to study three master plans: Project 1 for 1991-2000, Project 2 for 2000-2010, and the current one for 2020-2030.

“The study of the Project 3 was completed in January 2022 with implementation set to begin year by year. By 2030, Phnom Penh must have the capacity to produce 1.8 million m3 of water to fulfil the demand,” said HE Naro.

From 1993 to 2020, the budget spent on building and supplying clean water was US$690 million, increasing water supply from 63,000 m3/ day to 592,000 m3/ day.

However, the authority still also urged people in Phnom Penh to use water wisely due to the increase in population and average consumption of water per person, as well as the lower level of the water in the Mekong River.
